Occupational Medicine

Occupational Medicine is a medical speciality that deals with the protection of human health and safety in the workplace, the prevention of occupational diseases, and the avoidance of any type of accident during the performance of work activities.

It is therefore an activity practised in close cooperation between doctors, technicians, and company personnel such as the Employer, the Safety Officer, and the workers.

The occupational physician plays an important role in occupational safety and health by taking part in the drafting and revision of the Risk Assessment Document.

The occupational physician is also responsible for:

  • Workplace inspections;
  • Preventive medical examinations;
  • Periodic medical examinations;
  • Medical examinations at the worker's request;
  • Medical examinations in the event of a job change.

MONITORING

The Consolidated Law on Occupational Safety and Health (Italian Legislative Decree no. 81/08) defines the obligation of health monitoring for all companies whose employees are exposed to risks subject to periodic examinations.

The appointed occupational physician must draw up and apply a specific health monitoring protocol, defined according to the individual work tasks of employees and with a minimum frequency of examinations. The occupational physician can change the frequency of examinations or add extraordinary examinations, for example in the case of job changes with exposure to different risks, or if examinations are linked to the termination of employment or requested in the pre-employment phase.

Workers can also directly request examinations that will be provided by the occupational physician if they are deemed to be related to specific work exposure.
