Pumping Station

In modern security systems technology, fire-fighting water supplies for water-based fire-extinguishing systems almost play the role of basic infrastructure, which is essential for all other applications.

Fire-fighting water supply systems can be implemented using public or private water supply networks.

Water supplies served by public networks are certainly more reliable and guarantee greater continuity of water supply, but they usually have mediocre performance in terms of flow rate and pressure. In Italy, this solution is rarely used, because the public network is unable to meet demand.

Private water supply involves the construction and operation of one's own network, to supply fire-fighting systems only, or shared between fire-fighting systems and the industrial water supply network.

In order to ensure their effectiveness, it is essential that the checks required by the standards, which detail all the activities and maintenance schedules, be performed by specialised personnel.

Maintenance phases and frequency

Phase Frequency Situation
Initial inspection - Assumption
(responsible company)
Occasional Before delivery of a new or modified system or when assuming the maintenance of a system
Monitoring
(internal)
Continuous
weekly and monthly
According to the scheduled maintenance plan, the correct functioning of the sprinkler system must be tested as specified by the manufacturer and the standard
Routine maintenance
(responsible company)
Trimestrale
Every six months
According to the scheduled maintenance plan
Extraordinary maintenance
(responsible company)
Occasional According to need for major repairs
Water supply test Annual According to regulatory requirements
Third-party inspection Annual Carried out by the responsible person. It should assess whether the system is in compliance with the standard, whether maintenance is adequate, and whether it is commensurate with the inherent risk.
Check and repair of tanks and valves Every three years According to regulatory requirements and in connection with the pumping station
Cleaning the water reserve Every ten years According to regulatory requirements and in connection with the pumping station

Documentation to be acquired prior to starting maintenance activities

  • User and maintenance manual;
  • Testing and installer document;
  • Product sheet;
  • System and electrical panel connection sheet;
  • As-built designs and documentation of the system;
  • Manufacturers' test procedure;
  • Test equipment.

Initial inspection

To be performed by the Maintenance Technician

Preliminary Inspection
  • Verification that the system corresponds to the executive plan; Installation in conformity with the standard
  • Visual inspection of the system
Functional Check
  • Verification that the system logics correspond to the project requirements with verification of the detailed list of system components;
  • Testing of the real effectiveness of the pumping stations with determination of the pump curve;
  • Physical start-up and operational monitoring;
  • Local check and check of conformity.

Monitoring

To be completed by the Assigned personnel

What?
  • Visual inspection;
  • Checking the status messages on the system.
When?
  • Weekly, monthly depending on the type of check to be carried out and the size of the system.
Increase frequency in the case of:
  • Installations in high-risk environments;
  • Installations in environments with particularly adverse weather conditions;
  • Specific requirements of the manufacturer or designer.

Quarterly Periodic Inspection

To be performed by the Maintenance Technician

What?
  • Check that the initial inspection documents are on hand;
  • Check that no actions have been taken or structural changes made in the protected environment.
How?
  • The quarterly periodic inspection must be performed by a Specialised Company that must check the sprinkler fire-extinguishing system and the pumping station - if any - on the basis of the minimum checks contained in standard UNI EN 12845, using specific instruments, suitable manuals, design drawings, wiring diagrams, and operating logics provided by the User;
  • It must also verify that the auxiliary features are present (automatic and manual pump start-ups, check that the alarm bells are working, etc.)

Three-Yearly Periodic Inspection

To be performed by the Maintenance Technician

How?
  • Check, repair, or replace all shut-off valves, alarm valves, and check valves.
